Freeware and Open source software for Symbian OS Series 60 (S60) 3rd Edition / Symbian 9.1

S60Dict for 3rd Edition

Feb 26th, 2007 by yohanes

Update: Certificate has been updated (in the previous version you will get Certificate Expired message).

dict.pngI have used the Dictionary program for a while, but I think the application is not enough for me. Some limitations that I dont like are: only one dictionary, there is no listing of adjacent words if I mistyped the word that I looked for, from the definition page, I have to press two keys to go back to the main page.

I like S60Dict, an offline dictionary engine for DICT databases. It has all the features that I want, both bilingual (available from http://freedict.org) and definition dictionaries (including English definition) can be downloaded freely.

Unfortunately S60Dict is only available for 1st and 2nd edition devices. But this application is open source, so I decided to port this application to 3rd edition. It only took me a couple of hours to do it, and I think the result is OK (it can adjust orientation and screen size changes, it uses SVG for the icon, etc). I have only tested this application on Nokia E61 and on emulator, please tell me if you found a problem on other mobile phone models.

Source code for the ported S60Dict can be downloaded here and here is the Symbian installer (SIS file) file: s60dict_s60_3rd.SIS

Hello! Great program, but how do i find the “path”? I have transfered dictonery to Memoerycard slot: dictioneries/swe-eng.dict.dz and dictioneries/swe-eng.index. How do i know the path to the memory card?

    Humble regards Mike.

Files on the phone memory has the path C:\data\FOLDERNAME (unless you use special programs, directories/folders C:\ is not visible). The path for the files on the memory card starts with E:\, so the path for your files is E:\dictioneries.

To make it simple, you can just put the program on memory card (install to memory card), and the dictionaries at a folder named “Dict” on your memory card, so you wont have to change the path at all.

Thanks a lot!! It working perfectly, but it seems that dictionery at freedict.org is only “one-way” translating :(

    Hi Mike,

Yes, the dictionaries are one-way translating. That is the limitation of the DICT format. For translating a language both-ways you need to install two dictionaries (one for each direction).

    Hi,

I wonder, is it possible to make the font customizable?
Presently I see just the standard font, which is

    1. Uncomfortably small, and
    2. Is pretty poor (WGL4?).

I’ve installed a richer font (palatino linotype) in my E61, which has
the full IPA character set for the phonetic transcription, the
“extended Greek” subrange etc; I can see it in MobiPocket — but I
cannot read the transcriptions in my dict data.

Probably that could be done with the rss file; yet I guess that
require some sort of SDK to define and compile the definition of the
    font resource?

    Hi,
I tried to load the S60Dict reader + downloaded freedict-eng-rus-0.2.dic.dz to try out but I just could not find the dict despite trying different paths. Do you have any suggestions how I can get to read this?
    I am using a E61i phone.

Hi! Thanks for porting this program to the S60 3rd edition!
I have a little question if you don’t mind: I installed this app onto my Nokia N73 and the installed application appeared without any icon in the menu, just a caption saying “S60Dict”. The problem is it messes up with task switching menu – it goes crazy because it cannot display an icon for S60Dict and switches to random application once an item is selected if S60Dict is running. Thus in typical scenario I have to exit S60Dict immediately after looking up a word or two, then switch to reader, encounter a new word, fire S60Dict again, look it up, exit, etc.
The question is: how can I change the icon of S60Dict?

Hi Yohanes. Perhaps a cheeky question, but as you mentioned in the S60Bible site that your wife now has the bought Nokia 5800, could you update this s60Dict for that? It probably mainly concerns the touch screen interfacing. Thanks for app!

Thanks a lot for this really useful software. It’s because of projects like this that I still have faith in Nokia’s potential.
